Magic search for stronger start at defending champ Celtics

MILWAUKEE -- Wendell Carter Jr. grabbed an offensive rebound, hit a 16-foot jump shot and converted the and-one at the charity stripe.

The next possession, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope picked off a pass from Milwaukee's Bobby Portis and went right to the basket for easy points.

Then Anthony Black picked up a loose ball off the hands of Damian Lillard and finished in transition.

Orlando (23-19) still trailed by 18 points halfway through the second quarter at Fiserv Forum on Wednesday night and this sequence was a lone bright spot for Jamahl Mosley's squad in a 29-point loss to the Bucks.

"There was an energy and effort issue," Mosley said. "We have to learn from this, take what we can from it and then move forward.

"You don't like losing games, especially when you get your butt kicked, but you also have to know you have to bounce back, can't hang your head, be ready to go and move on the next game," he added.

Beede's Breakdown: How shorthanded Magic got clobbered by Bucks

That next game for the Magic will be no cakewalk, either.

Orlando travels to the defending champion Celtics (28-12) for Paolo Banchero's fourth contest back after two-plus months out with a torn right abdominal muscle. It'll be one of the Magic's few appearances on ESPN.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers, who won a championship in Boston (2008), said Milwaukee made a concerted effort to attack Banchero's dribble by placing a smaller guard on him. The plan worked and the Magic forward turned the ball over 7 times.

Banchero knows teams will try to speed him up on offense as he continues to find his groove.

"This is the NBA. Nobody's going to take it easier or feel sorry so I definitely expect them and other teams to take note of that," he told reporters in the locker room Wednesday night.

"I've got to do a better job of just protecting the ball."

It wasn't just the turnovers that hurt. The group as a whole came out sluggish against the Bucks who were playing on the second night of back-to-back. Milwaukee led by 18 following the first frame, 21 points at halftime and 24 entering the fourth.

"We've just got to come out with more energy," Banchero said. "As a group top to bottom, we've got to be more ready to play. We're down a lot of bodies but we can't make excuses and we've just got to come out and play for each other."

The Magic star couldn't pinpoint an exact reason for the lull, but these types of losses happen. Just ask the Celtics, who fell by 13 points at Toronto (10-31) on Wednesday night.

After Boston started the season 26-9, it's 2-3 in its last five.

And the Magic are actually responsible for one of Boston's 12 losses. In their first meeting, they beat the Celtics by 4 on Dec. 23 at Kia Center.

Orlando, however, will be shorthanded again.

The Magic won't have Franz Wagner (return to competition reconditioning), Jalen Suggs (low back strain), Goga Bitadze (concussion protocol), Gary Harris (left hamstring strain) and Jett Howard (left ankle sprain) against the Celtics, who enter with a clean bill of health.

Banchero knows Boston will be hungry to even the season series.

"We beat them last time at home," he said, "so I'm sure they haven't forgotten that."
