Everything we know so far about the deadly Texas train derailment

What seems to be a scene out of a movie, is a reality in West Texas after a train derailed and crashed into the Pecos Chamber of Commerce. The crash happened Wednesday, December 18 around 5 p.m. in Pecos, Texas. Pecos is located about five hours away from San Antonio.

According to the officials with the Town of Pecos City, train derailed near Oak Street and Dot Stafford Street after colliding with a tractor-trailer. KOSA-TV in Odessa reports the train crashed into the Pecos Chamber of Commerce. At least one person was killed in the crash. However, it's unclear who that person was. Four people were hurt in the crash.

City officials say there is no immediate hazard to the public. However, they are asking the public to avoid the area. Videos shared on social media show the impact of the crash as the train collided with the tractor-trailer.

NewsWest9 reports both the Texas Department of Public Safety and Union Pacific are investigating. Meanwhile, the Pecos Police Department is the lead agency on the derailment. Pecos City Manager Charles Lino told NewsWest9 that "three cars" had hazardous material onboard, but are contained.

TxDOT released a warning to drivers regarding road closures.

"US 285 northbound and southbound is currently closed. Due to train derailment. Seek alternate route," they shared on social media.

Pecos officials say a press conference will be held Thursday morning 10 a.m. at the Reeves County Annex II Building to provide more details regarding the deadly incident.
