Dallas Cowboys move on from head coach Mike McCarthy

After a weeklong standoff, the Dallas Cowboys have moved on from their head coach Mike McCarthy, whose contract was set to expire after the season. In Dallas, McCarthy posted a 49-35 record -- 36-22 when starting quarterback Dak Prescott was healthy -- and made the playoffs from 2021-2023. Coupled with his record leading the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy has an overall record of 174-112-2 as an NFL head coach.

McCarthy is likely to get interviews with other franchises, as the Chicago Bears requested to speak with him last week for their head coaching vacancy. The Cowboys, despite not engaging McCarthy's camp on a potential deal, rejected that permission. Now that Dallas is no longer squatting on McCarthy, though, you can bet that he'll get that interview with Chicago -- a club that seems to be casting a wide net in their coaching search.

Beyond the Cowboys and Bears, the other head coaching jobs available out there are with the New York Jets, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New Orleans Saints and the Las Vegas Raiders. The New England Patriots have already signed former player Mike Vrabel to replace Jerod Mayo, another former Bill Belichick-era defender.

McCarthy might be the only former Packers coach to get a look at a head coaching opportunity this offseason. So far, none of Green Bay's coaches have been requested for head coaching interviews. A coach to watch, though, is offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich, who might get some looks as a play-calling offensive coordinator elsewhere. At the moment, the Packers' play-caller is head coach Matt LaFleur, so Stenavich could potentially leave for a promotion that on paper would be a lateral move in terms of title.
