Report: Penguins star had his Stanley Cup rings stolen in burglary

Pittsburgh Penguins star player Evgeni Malkin is the latest high-profile athlete to become the victim of a home burglary.

KDKA in Pittsburgh's Jennifer Borrasso reported on Tuesday night that Malkin had his three Stanley Cup rings stolen during a home burglary. The burglary took place while Malkin was playing in his Penguins' home game against the Ottawa Senators at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday.

"Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin's home was burglarized this past weekend. Details of the situation will not be made public as this is an ongoing investigation. We are working closely with local authorities and team security. Malkin has requested that his privacy be respected during this time and we will have no further comment on the matter," the Penguins said in a statement Tuesday.

The Stanley Cup rings are from the Penguins' 2009, 2016 and 2017 championship teams on which Malkin starred.

The 38-year-old center lives in the Pittsburgh suburbs, and nobody was home at the time of the burglary.

The burglary is part of a concerning pattern throughout the country. A South American group has been burglarizing the homes of professional athletes over the last several months while the players were away at games. The criminals know the players' schedule, which allows them to plan their break-ins. The NFL even issued a warning to players in November over the matter.

Malkin is in his 19th NHL season, all of which he's spent with the Penguins. In addition to his three Stanley Cups, Malkin has also won a Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP) and is a two-time Art Ross Trophy winner (most points).
