Ingestion of 'poisonous' mushroom leads to Utah death | Gephardt Daily

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 21, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) -- Officials have posted an alert on social media after a fatality involving tainted "poisonous" mushrooms.

The Utah Poison Control Center recently learned of a possible death associated with eating poisonous mushrooms, the center at the University of Utah has posted online. "Public health authorities are still investigating the case."

The patient reportedly ingested psychedelic mushrooms purchased on the street, according to the center. . "They developed severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea shortly after followed by fulminant liver failure, acidosis, and hypotension. The patient died about 36 hours later."

The patient ate what they thought were hallucinogenic ("magic") mushrooms, the center said."'Magic' mushrooms do not cause liver damage. Liver failure from eating misidentified mushrooms does occur, but there has never been a case in Utah."
