Former Brigham and Women's doctor indicted on rape charges

A Middlesex County grand jury indicted a former Massachusetts doctor on rape charges stemming from the sexual assault of his patients, authorities announced.

Dr. Derrick Todd, who practiced at several locations, including the Charles River Medical Associates in Framingham, was indicted on two counts of rape, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said on Thursday.

The indictments are in connection to the sexual assaults of two women who were his patients at the time of the assaults, the district attorney said. The assaults happened between December 2022 and June 2023 during medical examinations.

Although Todd's arraignment hasn't been scheduled, it could be held as early as Friday, the district attorney said.

Todd was a rheumatologist at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital until he was fired on July 31, 2023, after an internal investigation forced the hospital to act.

In recent years, more than 200 women have come forward with sexual assault claims and filed lawsuits against Todd.

Mimi DiTrani started seeing Todd at Charles River Associates in Framingham in November 2022. She filed a lawsuit in Suffolk Superior Court stating Todd performed unnecessary vaginal and breast examinations even though she was only seeing him for rare joint and skin conditions.

More than 200 women and men have joined a consolidated lawsuit against Todd in Massachusetts' Suffolk Superior Court, accusing the former physician of sexually assaulting them and performing necessary exams, according to the Associated Press.

The lawsuit, combining several filed last year, accuses Todd of performing unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, testicular examinations and rectal examinations on patients.

It alleges that Todd began abusing patients in 2010. It also accused several dozen other defendants, including Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital and Charles River Medical Associates, of knowing about the abuse and failing to stop it.
