PHOENIX (AZFamily) -- A teen girl has died, and a teen boy is in the hospital after a multiple-vehicle crash in north Phoenix.
The crash happened at the intersection of 51st Avenue and Bell Road just before 1 p.m. on Friday.
While Phoenix Fire officials initially reported that the crash involved a school bus and another vehicle, Phoenix Police later clarified that a sedan and an SUV collided and that a school bus was not involved.
They said the cars involved in the crash slid into a bus, but no kids were onboard, and the driver was not hurt.
Crews pulled two people out of the sedan. Phoenix Fire officials say a teen girl was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, and a teen boy was transported in stable condition.
Saturday morning, Phoenix Police said the girl died at the hospital. She was identified as 17-year-old Beyonce Vasquez.
"It is very dangerous. There's accidents a lot. People just speed through, they run all the red lights. They're not paying attention. They need to slow down in this town," said Marci Reed, a hairdresser at Salon 51, which is in a plaza near 51st Avenue and Bell Road.
Between 2019 and 2023, ADOT reports there have been 192 crashes at this intersection, 61 involving injuries.
"This is probably the most serious that we have seen on this corner in a quite a while," said Stacy Young, another hairdresser at Salon 51. "We will sit out and count how many sirens we hear a day."
The Phoenix Police Department is investigating what led to the crash. The intersection is closed in all four directions.
