'Strange looking dude' knocks on Palm Beach door in soiled blanket, looking for Mar-a-Lago

PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) -- A Fort Lauderdale man was accused of burglary in Palm Beach after asking a local for directions to Mar-a-Lago carrying stolen car registrations and mail.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Palm Beach Police Department (PBPD) officers responded to Palm Beach home after a caller reported a "strange looking dude" knocked on his front door looking for the golf resort. The caller added the man claimed he was a New York Times reporter.

A PBPD sergeant was the first to locate the suspect, who was identified as Miguel Antonio Culumna Rodriguez, two blocks south of the caller's home on Seaspray Ave. in Palm Beach, per police.

According to the Sergeant, Rodriguez, 38, was wearing a white soiled hospital blanket with a rope tied around his waist and blue jeans.

Rodriguez was reportedly holding a menu from 'Sant Ambrous' stuffed with various pieces of stolen mail and vehicle registrations were taken from cars with addresses in Palm Beach.

When police questioned Rodriguez, he admitted to taking the registrations from glove boxes, alleging that his 'boss' directed him to do so, according to PBPD.

After police spoke with the homeowners at the addresses, they confirmed multiple documents were missing and told police that they wished to prosecute.

Rodriguez also told police that the stolen mail was from an 'open' mailbox. The parcels allegedly consisted of landscaping invoices, Walgreens prescription information, paperwork from Fisher Investments, and a financial statement from New Edge Wealth.

Rodriguez claimed he took the mail because he was thinking of opening a landscape business and wanted to 'gain a client' for his future business enterprise.

PBPD found probable cause to arrest Rodriguez for burglary of an unoccupied conveyance.
