Community members in Yarmouth celebrated the season of giving with the 13th annual Tim Flaherty Memorial Blood Drive. Flaherty was a lieutenant for the Portland Fire Department who died back in 2011 due to myelofibrosis, a rare form of bone cancer. Therese Flaherty, Tim's wife and organizer of the drive, says blood transfusions were an important part of Tim's fight, helping him gain more time to be with family."This tugs at my heart," said Flaherty. "Knowing that people are coming out to give blood in his memory, and to give someone else the gift of life so they could live a little longer with their family, like Tim did."This year's drive saw around 60 donors, exceeding the goal of 45 donations. Therese and her partners at the American Red Cross say the drive has helped supply blood for over 500 people. If you would like to give blood this holiday season, you can find donation centers near you at redcrossblood.org.
