China drags VW Group global 2024 sales down to just over 9m units

Volkswagen Group achieved 9.03 million vehicles delivered worldwide in 2024, down 2.3 percent on the previous year (9.24 million vehicles).

Lower sales in China last year dragged Volkswagen Group's overall sales performance down by 2.3% to just over 9 million units (9.03 million). Growth in North America (+6 percent) and South America (+15 percent) was offset by consistent deliveries in Europe (-0.1 percent) and declines in China (-9.5 percent).

VW said that China continues to be subject to a fierce price war and group sales down 9.5% at 2.9 million units.

Oliver Blume, CEO Volkswagen Group, said that VW achieved its sales target 'in a challenging market environment'. He said: "On our way to becoming the automotive technology leader, we have introduced more than 30 new models with numerous innovations - including many all-electric vehicles. In the all-electric vehicle segment, the Volkswagen Group is by far the market leader in Europe. This makes us proud and at the same time spurs us on. This year, we continue to consistently renew our portfolios and bring another 30 new models on the road for our customers across all brands."

Analysts say the price war in China is coupled with the very strong performance of Chinese makers in electrified car market segments and this is making competitive landscape for global players such as VW Group.

VW Group made some 744,800 worldwide BEV deliveries in 2024, down 3.4 percent on the previous year (771,100 vehicles).

Volkswagen Group's drop in 2024 vehicle sales was smaller than the 4% declines logged at Mercedes and BMW.
