Texas Mall Car Crash: Everything We Know

In Texas, five people have been injured and a driver has been shot dead by police after driving his car into the Killeen Mall outside of Austin, around 5pm local time on Saturday afternoon.

The suspect has not yet been named by police.

Sgt. Bryan Washko of the Texas Department of Public Safety gave a press conference late on Saturday night in which he detailed the incident.

Washko said the driver in question was called in as a possible DUI driver, and when a Texas Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, it did not give right of way. The vehicle then exited a highway, entered the parking lot of the mall, and then drove through glass doors into a JCPenney store. The driver then continued to travel "several hundred yards" striking "multiple people" in the process.

A trooper and police officer continued on foot after the vehicle within the store, and engaged in gunfire to take the suspect down, and eliminate the threat to the community.

Texas police were keen to stress that contrary to some reports, this was not an active shooter situation, but rather someone who was "running from the law."

Police say four people were taken to hospital with minor to severe injuries, and that one other person took themselves to the emergency room as a result.

There was no update given on the conditions of those injured.

Sgt. Washko added, "You don't want this to happen at all, but this time of year makes it worse. There's people in here shopping for their families, their children, their friends, loved ones, and these kind of things we don't like to see."
